Cupping and Gua Sha

Relieve Stress and Chronic Pain with Cupping and Gua Sha

Both cupping and gua sha are ancient techniques, rooted in Chinese Medicine, that promote relaxation, ease tension and inflammation, and help break patterns of chronic pain. At Wildflower Acupuncture, we incorporate both cupping and Gua Sha as part of our acupuncture sessions on an as needed basis, determined by our acupuncturist. Cupping is also available to be booked on its own.

FAQs

01

What is Cupping?

Cupping is a tradition deeply rooted in ancient Chinese medicine and, for best results, should be performed by a licensed acupuncturist. As opposed to massage, which applies inward pressure to points on the body, cupping uses suction to help separate the muscles from the fascia from the surrounding tissues. Cupping therapy breaks up areas of chronic stagnation and pain and releases adhesions to help relieve muscle tension and increase range of motion and mobility. The sensation of cupping can range from mild to moderate intensity, depending on your preferences. With more intense levels of suction, tiny capillaries in the skin begin to expand and burst, which creates the circle marks you see for about a week after treatment. This breakthrough stimulates the body to create new vessels, which will flourish bringing fresh blood and nutrients to nourish the muscle and tissues. Cupping also helps stimulate lymphatic drainage and facilitates the removal of toxins from the body.

What is Gua Sha?

Gua Sha, originating in ancient Chinese Medicine, is a therapeutic practice involving one directional rapid scraping of the skin to clear disease, release stagnant blood from the subcutaneous fascia, and accelerate the healing process. It also stimulates the lymphatic system to move excess fluids and flush out toxins. “Gua” means scrape, and “sha” is the purple red rash it leaves behind. There are many different tools used for Gua Sha among Chinese medicine practitioners. Some use metal, wood, ceramic, or stone to stimulate microcirculation, stretch the connective tissue, and soften adhesions.
